[table id=9 /] Such an action packed day but how are Indians expected to perform? Read on:

Lawn Bowls

This British pastime sport, which has miraculously found roots in Jharkhand's tribal belt, may just return India's unlikeliest medal at the 2018 CWG. A cruel fourth place finish at the 2014 CWG was down to 'lack of knowledge of English and mental strength' as the national team coach has said. The group matches start from Thursday, while the medal matches will start from the weekend.

Badminton

This is what the line up will look like for the team event vs Sri Lanka

Gymnastics

The current contingent of gymnasts has clearly had to walk on fire before the Games with several problems plaguing them- they included the likes of non-issuing of visas on time and travel plans not being finalised till the last day. But the time has now come to put all that behind and concentrate on the tournament in hand. 3 Indian Gymnasts will be trying their luck out in the Individual All-Around category and it is important to establish at the outset that it is not one of India's strengths. Rakesh Patra, Yogeshwar Singh and Ashish Kumar will be vying for the top spots here.
It is worth remembering that till a few weeks ago, Rakesh Patra's inclusion in the squad had been in doubt. The ace Indian Gymnast recently completed a fourth place finish in the World Cup and his main strength are the Rings and parallel bars segments. India's first Gymnastics International medalist and India's most successful, Ashish Kumar has a chance at shining in Floor exercise. However, excellence in the Individual All round category continues to elude him.

Table Tennis

The Indian table tennis team are all set to open their campaign and exorcise the ghosts of Glasgow and Rio and match or even better the 2010 Delhi tally in this edition of the Commonwealth Games at the Oxenford Studios in Gold Coast. Sharath Kamal, a former Commonwealth Games gold medal winner will be looking to add more feathers to his cap. Sharath along with Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, who is ranked as high as 46 in the world, will be spearheading the Indian men's contingent in the absence of Soumyajit Ghosh who lost his place in the squad after alleged accusations of raping a minor.
The women's team will be led by Manika Batra and Mouma Das who exemplify a perfect blend of youth and experience. Both of them have been on a roll in the past twelve months with a top eight finish at the World Table Tennis Championships before winning a silver at the Spanish Open. While both of them have had previous experience at Commonwealth Games, they haven't featured together. The Indian paddlers will compete in seven categories - men's team, men's singles, men's doubles, women's team, women's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles

Hockey

The Indian Women's Hockey Team will begin their campaign in Gold Coast with the mission to end their 12-year medal-drought at the Commonwealth Games. The Women's outfit had last won the Commonwealth Games Gold in 2002 followed by a Silver Medal in 2006. Packed with confidence and a refreshing winning attitude, Rani-led Indian Women's squad is ready to recreate history.
But to reach the podium, the team needs to get past initial hurdle in Pool A which has Wales, Malaysia, England and South Africa. With a good one week spent at the competition arena, the team is looking to start with a win tomorrow.

Weightlifting

One of India's strongest suits. Indians won medals in 14 out of the total 19 weight categories at 2014 CWG. Guru Raja Poojary (5 am - 7:30 am) Weight Category - 56kg This pick up truck driver's son from a family of eight in the fishing village of Kundapura on Karnataka's coastline might turn out to be the first Indian to strike gold. In recent years, the 26-year-old has won a Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships gold with a 249kg lift and a South Asian Games gold with a 241 kg lift. A lift above 240 kg can be expected to get a medal, while his personal best of 249kg is good enough for gold.
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu (9:30 am - 12 noon) Weight Category - 48 kg
Even If Guru Raja falls short (which is unlikely), India can remain confident of a first weightlifting medal on the first day itself. Mirabai Chanu, who has become a legend in her sport at the age of 23, has a record that is miles ahead of the rest of the field. Her personal best of 194kg stands over 10kg more than her closest competition, Canada's Amanda Braddock, who has a personal best of 173kg. The CWG all-time record is 175kg. Medal guaranteed. Muthupandi Raja (2pm - 4:30 pm) Weight Category - 62 kg
This 18-year-old from Tamil Nadu has had an impressive run in the junior circuit of late, clearing the 260kg mark last year. However, a spot among the medals will require a marked improvement as just the bronze medal place in the 2014 CWG was 271kg.

Swimming

Virdhawal Kadhe recently won medals at the Singapore Open Championships with timings within a couple of strokes from his national records swims a decade ago. His 23.02 seconds 50m freestyle swim compares very well with his national record of 22.68 seconds, and this with just 6 months hardcore training. Accompanying Virdhawal Kadhe to Gold coast is Srihari Natraj, the teenage backstroke specialist and probably India's best talent since Khade himself. Long of hands and limbs, Natraj seems to break national records in the 3 backstroke distances almost every time he enters the pool. The 17 year old shot into prominence at 2017 nationals with a clean sweep in the backstroke distances with
national records. He won the title of Best Swimmer Award too.
Arguably India's most versatile swimmer, Sajan Prakash is the third swimmer of the Indian contingent. More of an endurance swimmer than a sprinter, Sajan will participate in 100 & 200 butterfly apart from 1500 m free. He holds the national record the last two events.

Squash

The squash contingent for India will begin their 2018 Commonwealth Games tomorrow morning. The first to open will be Harinder Pal Sandhu Day 1 will close with Joshna Chinappa. In the 2014 Asian Games, Harinder Pal Sandhu won the first match for India which would lead to India's first ever gold medal in Squash at the Asian Games. Harinder is currently ranked 49 and will be taking on
Cameron Stafford
of the Cayman Islands in the Round of 64. Before this, Stafford took part in the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games. The second Indian on the squash court will be Mumbai's Vikram Malhotra. The world number 64 will face Manda Chilambwe of Zambia. Vikram Malhotra reached a career high ranking of 55 in December 2016. Saurav Ghosal is India's poster boy for squash, being the first Indian to ever win the British Junior Open. Currently, Ghosal is perched at number 13 and will begin his singles campaign tomorrow, although against whom, is yet to be known. Dipika Pallikal is India's first woman squash player break into the top 10 in the PSA Women's rankings. She will begin her singles run against
Charlotte Knaggs
of Trinidad and Tobago. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games she along with Joshna Chinappa won the squash women's doubles gold medal, making it India's first ever Commonwealth Games medal in the sport. At the same time as her doubles partner, Joshna Chinappa will be the last Indian on court at the end of Day 1 where she will take on 19 year old Lynette Vai from Malaysia. Joshna who is ranked number 17 in the world should have an easy way out with Vai, who is yet to break in to the top 200 in the PSA rankings.

Cycling

Another sport where India does not have much success to show traditionally. But
Deborah Herold
, the 23-year-old from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has been redrawing some boundaries in recent years, ever since she became World No 4 in in the 500m time trial in 2015. The CWG field, however, comprises some of the world's best - some Tour de France veterans, apart from the traditional heavyweights of England, Australia and New Zealand. Can Herold, or some other unlikely hero, script something historic on Day 1?

Boxing

Day 1 of the 2018 Commonwealth Games will see 2010 CWG Gold Medalist Manoj Kumar play the opening match for India against Nigeria's Osita Umeh. The 31 year old experienced pugilist will play in the 69 kg category.
