In the last few months, India has created quite a range in the shooting range, with the likes of Mehuli Ghosh, Anjum Moudgil, Elavenil Valarivan winning medals, creating world records, all within weeks of each other. The city of Auckland in New Zealand organised the 14th Commonwealth Games. The 1990 Commonwealth Games were held from 24th January 1990 to 3rd February 1990. Mt Smart Stadium was the main stadium for this multi-sport event. Goldie, the Kiwi bird, was the official mascot of the 1990 Commonwealth Games. India had put a bid to host this edition but lost the bid to New Zealand. However, India bettered its performance and finished with 32 medals. Out of 13 gold medals, 12 were won in weightlifting. Ashok Pandit won the thirteenth Gold for India in shooting (centre-fire pistol). India won eight silver and eleven bronze medals. He was the first shooter to win the Gold medal at the Commonwealth Games for India. This seemed to the beginning of a steady medal producing career. After the 1990 Commonwealth Games, Ashok Pandit went onto win gold medals in the 1994 as well as 1998 Commonwealth Games, thereby winning gold three times in a row. Ashok Pandit was also multiple medallists of the Asian Games and a one-time World Record holder. He also won the National Champion title again in 2002 after the gap of 10 years. He has earned more than 300 National Medals throughout his career span. In his latest achievements, he bagged the gold in 2005 Commonwealth Shooting Championships, Melbourne, gold in SAF championships, Dhaka 2009, gold in Centre Fire Pistol in International Shooting Championships, Hanover Germany 2011. With Abhinav Bindra no more in the scene, it is a crop of young girls who have been doing wonders in the world of shooting. With a lot of impressive victories in the bag ahead of the Commonwealth Games, will we see the rise of a string of Indian shooters that the world will take notice of in the coming years?
